The product group includes products of textile fibers, hides and leather. Clothing for both private and professional use, home textiles as well as textile fibers, yarns and fabrics for clothing or home textiles can be certified with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
Examples of clothing: trousers, shirts, jackets, workwear, uniforms, underwear, and bags.
Examples of home textiles: duvets, pillows, towels, bedding, curtains, tablecloths, and upholstery fabrics.
Nordic Swan Ecolabelled textiles, hides and leather must have a reduced environmental impact throughout the life cycle of the textile, and UN’s International Labour Conventions (ILO) on workers’ rights must be complied with in the production.
The requirements include:
Use of fibers that are either organic, recycled or based on renewable resources and meet specific environmental requirements.
Environmental and health properties of all chemicals used in the textile production. Among other things, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel forbids the use of substances that are carcinogenic, toxic to reproduction or can damage genetic material. Halogenated flame retardants fluorinated, and antibacterial additives incl. nanoparticles are also forbidden.
Implementation of a minimum of BAT (best available technology) water and energy efficiency techniques or local production of solar energy in textile production.
Test of the quality of the textile, e.g., dimensional change, color fastness and abrasion resistance.
Compliance with UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions on workers’ rights
Two types of licence: Manufacturing and product
Generation 5 of the requirements includes two licence types: manufacturing licence and product licence.
A manufacturing licence is for manufacturers when a product licence is for product owners / brand owners.
Each licence type requires a separate application. Fees are calculated per licence type.
In order to Nordic Swan Ecolabel a product, you need a product licence, which is based on one or more production licences.

* When both the applicant and the manufacturer are micro-enterprises, the fee is reduced by 50%. The definition of company size is based on EU recommendation 2003/361.
** Where audits require more than one day away from the office including travelling, Nordic Ecolabelling can invoice an additional fee of 1,083 € per extra day. Other extraordinary costs induced by the audit can also be invoiced the applicant.
*** The renewal fee only applies if the application has been signed and submitted before end of the validity of the licence. Else the normal application fee will apply.
**** Administrative tasks that takes less than 1 hour will not be invoiced.
All fees are exclusive of VAT. All information related to fees is subject to a disclaimer for errors and omissions.
The recipient is liable for the VAT according to article 56 of the Council Directive 2006/112/EC.

This product group is digitized.
You will find application guides and tools to help you with your application under the CRITERIA tab on this page. Application must be submitted via the Nordic Ecolabelling Portal, where you also upload your documentation.
Has one of your customers applied for certification with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel? You can help your customer by registering the product or item properties in our Supply Chain Declaration Portal. We can then use the information in processing your customers application.
